Well, we all hate taxes. But they are critical in that they keep our streets safe, paved, and cleaned of snow in the winter. They also provide water and sewage systems (for urban folk anyway), as well as provide schools, hospitals…. you know the score. But I believe that taxes should never be used as a profit device. Rather, taxes must reflect the real cost of providing services, although a small contingency amount does make sense. Municipalities will often obtain, at a hefty fee, reports that compare Municipal residential tax rates. This is either done to quell any protest regarding tax levies or as a way of justifying higher taxes, the logic being that “residents in other Municipalities are paying more so your rates are not too bad” (paraphrased). I find that to be manipulative and insincere. I will, as Councillor, fight any increases in residential tax rates and if I feel that those rates are justified, I will communicate that point with you.
